Blue
Fire - The Hangout
Saturday, November 23rd
L-R:
Josh Karickhoff, Derek Tomporowski & Gus Ward
Blue
Fire blazed through a hard rocking set at the Hangout
tonight. The band sounded excellent through the Hangout's
top notch sound system, and interesting visual displays
(like the one shown above) enhanced the performance.
The band played a mix of originals and cover tunes by the likes of Joe
Satrianni, Ozzy Osbourne and Deep Purple to name a few. Blue Fire is
becoming even more solid each time they perform (they were just at the
Gallery Cafe in Erie last night). It's amazing that eleven year old Karickhoff
can keep pulling out extended solos on song after song and continue to
keep it interesting. Supporting the guitarist are Ward and Tomporoski,
who's solid and tight rhythm section at times exceeds players twice their
age.
Don't miss a chance to see these guys live...

Various
artists - The Hangout
Saturday, November 2nd
Black
Rose Diary is a band to watch. Although they certainly
have elements of hardcore in their music they also
exhibit a much heavier quality at times with powerful
ear-flattening guitar work. And then there are the
catchy vocals and harmonies. They also aren't afraid
to show their roots once in while by adding a Stones
cover to the mix.
This band has something goes beyond simply playing their instruments
or writing interesting songs... there is an attitude and inexplicable
power running through their music which places them in a different league
than many bands in this genre'.
If these guys hang in there and play their cards right they just might
be able to move into a larger realm of popularity.
Dead
Letter was up just before Black Rose Diary and played a
high speed, supercharged set. This Erie band epitomizes
the all-ages hardcore scene: snarling vocals, ultra quick
tunes (usually coming in well under three minutes long),
relentless pounding drums and lots of stage diving. The
group functioned as the perfect release valve for a pent
up audience on a Saturday night.
Edinboro
area band Bound By Deceit opened the show tonight, but unfortunately
we arrived just as they were finishing their last song. (As
the pic above shows.) What we heard sounded promising and
we hope to catch the band again to do a more complete show
review.

Retaliatory
Strike - Forward Hall
Saturday, September 22nd
Local
hardcore straight edge group Retaliatory Strike pummeled
the audience at Forward Hall with a brief and brutal
set. Featuring Zach Shonts on vocals, Kyle Blackman on
guitar, Matt Barthlemes on bass and Josh Buck on drums
the quartet held their own along side The Hope Conspiracy,
Evergreen Terrace, Shattered Realm, Bury Your Dead and
Until The End.
Some
feel that Erie hardcore is on the way out, but the utterly
packed house at Forward Hall tonight would suggest otherwise.
Also, new ventures such as ErieShows.com are
helping to keep the hardcore scene moving forward.
For
more info see our page on Retaliatory
Strike where you can listen to Life Long Pledge,
which had the pit slamming hard at tonight's show.
