reviews
In astronomy,
Andromeda is a northern constellation south of Cassiopeia. Some
say as far as the naked eye can see. This also holds true of the
music of Andromeda, a local, progressive metal power trio.
"We don't really agree with labels," states vocalist Doug
Peck. "But people always ask 'What do you play?', and progressive
metal was the closest we could come up with."
Truth
is, their influences contain such a wide variety of styles, and
it shows in the individuality of each song.
"Our journey begins with Yes, Genesis, Zeppelin, even Sabbath,"
continues Peck, "slides through the 80's metal like Whitesnake
and Scorpions, hits the 90's art rock bands like Queensryche, Fates
Warning, and Dream Theater, add a cup of Rush, a dash of Megadeth,
and a pinch of Nine Inch Nails. In a nutshell, everything!"
Put that in a blender on low speed for three years, chill and enjoy
songs like "Crimson Tears", "Heaven's Gate",
"House of Rags", "False Profit". and "Deja
Vu". Don't expect to hear your radio favorites though. "Covers
are fun to play, but we decided long ago, why should we spend a
week on a Queensryche song when we could be writing another "House
of Rags"? We spend a lot of time writing and rewriting, and
the next week, we might scrap it and start over."
Steve Matusik (guitars) and Douglas Peck (vocals, bass, keyboards)
formed the nucleus of Andromeda in early 1995. They later added
the services of Steven Starvaggi (drums) in 1996. Originally a four
piece, they lacked a bass player for months. With no luck locating
one, Doug took the slot and filled the void in no time.
When asked of their future plans, the singer confessed, "We'd
love to do everything and anything, but the timing has to be right
for us. We're looking into updating our recording equipment and
eventually releasing our music. We don't believe it will ever be
outdated, at least not for us. That's most important because if
the band isn't enjoying what they're doing, how could the fans enjoy
it?"
Don't think we'll have a problem with that
