History
Perhaps
Espinaca's fate was determined by their beginning. In July of 2001,
Dan Briggs, Ryan Holquist, Doug Melvin, and Nathan Skinner served
as the house band for First Church Of The Covenant's Bible School.
Though this particular gig was non-paying, as many in the future would
be, it can be accredited to the beginning(s) of Espinaca.
After each day at our first and ultimately vital gig, the group would
be treated to lunch at various places. On one occasion, the group,
Mr. Steve Skinner, and Mr. Seph Kumer chose to have a dining experience
at the Marketplace Grille. Upon receiving menus, bassist Dan Briggs
proceeded to look at the vegetarian section, as he chooses to consume
nothing of animalic nature. Seph Kumer had been saying throughout
the day, "We have to find you guys a name." When Dan questioned
the entree including the term 'espinaca,' a resounding "That's
it!" could be heard. Or something. Despite frequent eye rolls
and smirks of shame brought on by the name, "Espinaca" seemed
to stick.
After an impromptu jam at drummer Ryan Holquist's house, #1 was written
and Espinaca was fully conceived.
