CD release - "300 Pounds Of Pork"

Denaldi
describes his music as ambient electronic, but that label
falls short... as most labels do. Although the music does
rely on electronics for drum loops, effects, sound bites,
etc. there is an organic, earthy vibe running through many
of the pieces. Songs such as "The End Of Forever" have
up-front, crystal clear acoustic guitar parts, as well
as Denaldi's voice which is deep, low and often treated
with a halo of reverb. Songs like "Silicone Diode
Implant" feature words that are spoken, rather than
sung and the result is quite effective.
The
overall tone and mood of this CD could be described as
haunting, brooding and melancholy. At times Denaldi's
music is a real downer... but in a good way. This picture
is completed by the liner notes where Denaldi thanks
his family "who's lack of understanding and compassion
have made me the twisted man I am today." Music
is an expression of emotion, and sometimes emotions are
not happy... or pretty. Still, Denaldi's emotions seem
authentic, and that is the measure of success in a song.
Denaldi's
lyrics deal with grief, lost love, loneliness and being
ostracized by his family. At times I am reminded of David
Sylvian or Peter Murphy as far as the vibe of this CD
(although the sound is completely different). The Mellotron
samples in "Ticker" are particularly haunting,
and the guitar part reminded me of "Planet Caravan" by
Black Sabbath.
One
criticism I have is with the CD packaging, it is in a
black and white photocopy type of style. Sometimes this
works for a lo-fi grunge or punk release, but in this
case it doesn't really match the music. If Denaldi could
put together creepy, moody, mysterious graphics that
matched his music he would have a consistent and outstanding
package.
Recommended for introspective, chill-out listening... alone.
