Battle Of The Bands 2004 @ Sherlocks

Battle 4 - 02.19.04

1. Bryan Burton

Before I begin I must point out that John Johnston (PlayErie.com's official Ambassador and Battle of the Bands reviewer) could not make this event due to a prior engagement. So I was elected to do the reviews. With that said . . . the following attempt displays my feebleness.

@ 1 Guinness

The Bryan Burton Band was the evening's opener. A cross between The J. Geils Band and circa 1971 Pink Floyd. The band was tight (how many times have you heard that one) and true to their style. The Roland synth pushed the sound toward the 80's and the Strat had those beautiful classic tones. I kept thinking "Eagles" even though they did not sound at all like them.

Unfortunately I believe they were hampered by 2 negative factors. Opening slot and a sound man who was using the "McDonalds" approach to mixing. What do I mean by "McDonalds"? Well . . . .now that I think of it ....it was also the" Play Dough Factory" approach as well..Sound in a box. or 1 sound fits all. These guys were mixed as if they were a death metal band....which they are not. Thunderous bass and kick drum. Where was the melody? Buried under the bass. A different mix would have helped these guys out tremendously. I would like to hear them again either in a different venue or with a better mix.

Overall they were a bunch of talented guys with some decent tunes.

2. FDH2O

@ 2 Guinness

FDH2O. Or Face Down In High Water occupied the middle slot for Battle 4. Hard rock/metal? Not sure. They reminded me of Judas Priest punching out Coal Chamber. But what the hell do I know?

Here's where the soundman's "1 Mix Fits All" method works. Lots of energy and distortion! AAHHH. Reminds me of my youth! Once again this band has a style which they were true to. I see from the PlayErie Calendar that this band plays alot.....and it shows. You can't get a sound this polished just by rehearsing. You gotta' slug it out live. Very strong performance.

3. Vertigo

@ 2 Guinness & 1 Boddington's (The Boddington's swilled down next door at Molly Branagans, which will NEVER get another penny out of me. $4.95 for a pint of Boddington's! That's more than I can get a pint for in Chicago!)

Vertigo closed the evening. More hard rock/metal. These guys didn't remind me of anyone. Now that is either great or horrible depending on your viewpoint. Or maybe it was the Boddington's . . .Another instance where the "1Mix Fits All" method works. Hey.....I think I'm stumbling upon something! 1 Mix Fits All only works for heavy type acts. I get it!!!

These guys were similar to FDH2O. Maybe a little more melodic. Another strong performance.
